The Multiplexity of Ecological Communities
Dr. Sonia Kéfi (Institut des Sciences de l'Evolution de Montpellier, CNRS, France)

Species are linked to one another by a myriad of positive and negative interactions in ecological communities. Ecological network studies have typically focused on networks of one (or a few) interaction types at a time (e.g. food webs, plant-pollinator networks, etc). As a consequence, we know very little about the structure and the dynamics of ecological networks incorporating diverse interaction types simultaneously (i.e. ‘multiplex networks’). I will discuss the challenges related to the merging of several interactions types in ecological networks and illustrate the consequences of the multiplexity of ecological network for our understanding of the dynamics and resilience of ecological communities.
